Campbell County-NEW PHOTO!

The 189,000 square-foor Campbell County recreation facility is currently under construction.  The two major programmatic elements are a community recreation center and a multi-sport school district component.  These two diverse components will be fused into one seamless entity that takes advantage of shared use opportunities, and fulfills the sports and recreation needs of the recreation district.

Because this will also be a spectator venue for organized team sports, different user groups will require separation without isolation.  This separation begins on the site where three distinct entities will be served by three parking bays.  When more parking is needed, shuttles will ferry onlookers between the facility and the high school, which is a half-mile away.  This will reduce overcrowding in the facility lots, and minimize any frustration for both recreation facility users and spectators during major sporting events.

The sculptural forms of the building itself, and the extensive use of daylighting are reminiscent of the blue Wyoming sky and the natural stone fissures and rock formations that an indelible part of the local landscape. Two “solid” forms are fractured by a chasm of glass and stone to create the feel of a geologic adventure and to celebrate that which is at the root of the community’s existence.  Situated within an hour of Devil’s Tower Monument, the climbing wall that will serve as the focal point of the lobby will be formed to honor this national icon.
