Denver, Colorado - November 8, 2004 - It started as a design competition, and The Trails Recreation Center in Centennial, Colorado is now a reality for the rapidly growing Arapahoe Park and Recreation District. The design of the facility was awarded through a competition, with local Denver architects Ohlson Lavoie Collaborative at the helm, after drawing the winning design in the fall of 2002. The Park District worked with The Wells Partnership, also headquartered in Denver to oversee entitlements, design and the construction process. With over 80,000 square feet of space, The Trails Recreation Center features a pioneer theme derived from the building site, which is located alongside an original Denver settlement trail. State-of-the-industry recreation and aquatic components include an indoor aquatic park with dual body and flume slides, a lazy river and generous zero-depth entry pool for the youth of all ages. A pinnacle climbing wall is a breathtaking centerpiece of the facility’s main level. The pioneer motif carries from the lobby and concessions through the large children’s play and care area. Says architect and facility designer David Sprague, “It’s truly been both an honor and a thrill to be involved in this initial full-service recreation facility for the APRD. The subtle references to the past are meant to link the customers with a regional history that might otherwise go unnoticed.” Parks and Recreation District Board President Ken Schuss echoed the District’s sentiments regarding the design’s success. “We are pleased with the open feel of the recreation center and its generous views of the mountains and Piney Creek natural area.” The center is planning Grand Opening festivities on Saturday, November 20 from 8am to 4pm.
