OLC is honored to have been given the opportunity to participate in this most prestigious design challenge, to increase the capacity of the Holy Haram. With the number of pilgrimages to Mecca increasing every year, it continues to be important to find ways to accommodate present numbers as well as future increases. This will be done by improving the structure and facilities for the millions of pilgrims making their journey. The key design challenge was to protect the integrity of the spiritual feel, visibility, capacity, movement and circulation. OLC and Umm Al-Qura University College of Engineering and Islamic Architecture team collaborated on the design and successfully solved all the key issues while increasing the capacity of the holy haram by over 75%.
