Like many historical communities, the Colorado town of Castle Rock has experienced retail consumer exodus from the downtown core to the outskirts where big box outlets dominate. In a push to reverse this trend and create a vibrant new identity for the existing town center, the Downtown Development Authority hosted a design competition for planning and architectural solutions for the town square. The partnership of OLC, a Denver-based architecture firm celebrating their 50th year, and Norris Design, a well recognized planning firm, was awarded first place and a cash prize after a 3 month process narrowed the field from 28 to 4 teams. The winning solution focused on a complete re-branding of Wilcox Square in a unified theme that honors the rich history of Castle Rock in a playful yet cohesive palette. Variations were presented within each style which will allow each store owner to have their own look while providing overall visual continuity.
