Well and Good Newsletter 2022- Quarter 2

Slopeside Hall, Frisco, Colorado — Net Zero Design

LETTER FROM THE CEO

Dear Friends,

On behalf of everyone here at OLC, we hope that you and your circle of family and friends continue to be safe, healthy and well. Springtime is upon us, and this has definitely become a season of change.

Thinking globally, as our hearts go out to the people of Ukraine, we are mindful of the severe impact Russia’s war will have on global wellness.  Not only will the impacts certainly be severe on the economic front, but also on the physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness of those countries directly and indirectly effected by the conflict.  We are continuing to grapple with supply chain issues resulting from the global pandemic and wonder (although secondarily) what the supply shock triggered by the conflict might be.

Acting locally, we are breaking new boundaries and forging a new paradigm in Net-Zero Energy and Electrification at the Town of Frisco, Colorado’s Slopeside Hall project.  Designed with only electrical equipment for heating, ventilation and air conditioning while also leveraging advanced technologies in air-to-air heat pumps and robust thermal envelopes, the classroom and office building at the base of the Frisco Tubing Hill will consume as little energy as possible at a lower cost than installing traditional gas-fired heating equipment.  The money saved by switching to all-electric is more than enough to cover the cost of a roof-top solar photovoltaic array that will offset 100% of the annual electricity required to operate the facility.  It is this kind of application of advanced building technology that is leading the way to new way of thinking when it comes to lessening our impact on the planet while also delivering affordable, operational, and comfortable buildings for our clients.

We work with a truly outstanding team of consulting engineers on every project we design, and we could not do what we do without them.  I would like to put out a huge thank you to all of those that contribute to helping us to push the envelope and move wellness architecture forward. Kudos to the Slopeside team; Mechanical Engineer:  The Ballard Group, Lakewood, CO, Electrical Engineer:  AE Design Group, Denver, CO  Energy Modeling:  PCD/Bowman Engineering, Longmont, CO.

To all of our friends and colleagues, we thank you for your trust and look forward to collaborating with you in the near future.

Be Well,

Robert McDonald, CEO

RECENT PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

City of Palm Beach Gardens Tennis Clubhouse, Completed 2017

In 2017 OLC was selected as the Architect of Record by the city of Palm Beach Gardens for a new 11,000 sf Tennis Center Clubhouse. The City staff and citizens are delighted with the final building design and highly responsive services provided by OLC throughout the project’s design and construction.

In 2019, when the City began plans to provide a new par-3 golf course and associated club house for their community they revisited the well-liked tennis center. It was clear to the City golf club manager that the Tennis Clubhouse would be the best basis of design for the new Golf Clubhouse. The City engaged OLC to develop a design for the Golf Clubhouse. The team created a solution that compliments the Tennis Clubhouse. The approach intentionally deviates from traditional golf clubhouse design to attract both traditional and new golfers.

Construction for the beautiful new Golf Clubhouse is currently at 25% complete. The team anticipates to have it ready for the community’s use in October 2022.
